RIP Laptop (at least until it's resurrected)

Oh my gosh, you guys. A couple weeks ago my laptop was kind enough to warn me the hard drive was going to crash, just before it gasped its last breaths. So you might have noticed (or not) that I haven't been too active in the blogging world lately. Apparently, once you get that warning, your computer means it. Now it's just a cool-looking, shiny silver accessory with a pirate sticker on it, hiding under the couch because I want to cry every time I see it. Luckily it's still under warranty, but we need to wait until payday to send it to the manufacturer. In the meantime, I grab whatever computer time I can get on my husband's PC.

But really, aside from the terrible blogging and Facebook withdrawals, it's not that bad. I could have lost everything, but I was ready this time. The same thing happened to me a few years ago with my old laptop, except I was stupid then and didn't have any reliable backups. I backed up every once in a while, whenever I remembered, but my brain only remembers things like useless trivia about 80's bands - not really anything important.

So, that time, I lost a lot of writing. The entire rewritten section of my WIP, and almost all of what I had written of Cobalt - 6 chapters or so. Not a smart thing to do if you're a serious writer! Since then, I've backed up my writing almost every time. I used to do it manually, until I found an online backup program called Dropbox and I freaking love it! Check it out, if you're on the hunt for a reliable backup system. The files you put in Dropbox are saved online, and you can access them from any computer that has it installed. I still manually save my stuff to the network drive every once in a while, but now I don't have to worry about forgetting and losing anything new.

I hope you all have good backup systems, and if you don't, you better get your butt in gear and back that work up! Don't end up in tears like I did when I lost all those hours of hard work.

  1. Ugh. Sorry about your laptop's death. I hate it when technology spazzes out on us.

Thanks for the reminder on back-ups. Like you, I can only remember useless trivial things... Did ya know that if you're experiencing back pain, the worst you can do is lie down on your back? Because then the weight of your internal organs presses down on your spine and thereby putting pressure on the...GAHHH! Must. Go. Backup. Files. NOW!

    1. I didn't know that about back pain, but I'm glad you told me! The other day I put my back out picking up my cat, and I was in some serious pain for a while. I stopped resting on my back and it's finally getting better. Thanks love!

  2. Oh man! I hate when that happens. That totally sucks. I hope it is resurrected soon. And that is awesome about Dropbox. I didn't know it could do that. I'm going to have to figure it out. Brilliant. Glad you shared. :)

    1. It's so cool! It has the convenience of emailing yourself your work, and being able to access it from any computer, without the extra steps of backing up and/or emailing to yourself. I still do those extra steps once in a while, but it gives me a LOT of peace of mind! I did an emergency backup right after I got the error message, but I never had to access those files. I'm still using the same Dropbox folder, so it's like nothing ever happened. Except not having my laptop, of course. LOL

  3. My husband made me by a flash drive. Now I keep it in my purse. BUT I also save to both my Mac at home and my PC at work just in case.

    SUCKS when stuff dies. :(

    1. I used to have a couple of backup flash drives too but the kids swiped them for school. I love them though, cool little gadgets.

  4. I've got a dropbox account, but I also email my stuff to me--to two different accounts. I've lost flash drives before (the dang things are so small).

    1. I know! I've lost some too! They're awesome but too tiny for the likes of me--unless I put one on a keychain or something. I'd love to make a steampunk flash drive for fun (like the pic in the following link), but I'd probably lose it and then someone else would appreciate its awesomeness instead of me. LOL

  5. Glad it's only a frustration and not a crisis. Now, I;m going to go check out dropbox.

  6. Oh, that happened to me about five years ago. My computer crashed, hubs wiped the hard drive to fix and removed two years of writing. TWO YEARS. I still mourn those lost MS. Now I use flashdrives, an external hard drive AND my agent's inbox (love gmail) as a backup. I think DropBox sounds great, tho.
